When the two numbers are separated by even numbers and are fairly close to each other, you can use squares to find the answer. This will be especially helpful if the average of the two numbers is multiple of 5.

*For example:***38 * 32****Step 1:**Find half of the sum of the two numbers (also known as average) and square it.

*In this case, average of 38 and 32 is 35. Square of 35 is 1225*

**Step 2:**Find half of the difference of the two numbers and square it

*Here, half of difference between 38 and 32 is 6/2 = 3 and square of 3 is 9*

**Step 3:**Subtract output of Step 2 from Step 1

1225 – 9 =

**1216**

**Logic behind this trick:**

Half of sum of A and B = (A + B)/2

Half of difference of A and B = (A – B)/2

Difference between squares of the above two = [(A + B)/2] ^ 2 - [(A – B)/2] ^ 2 = A * B

*Basic requirement to use this rule is mastery of squares (refer to page on Squares)*
